でも、木材を扱う私たちの仕事は、
いつも「伐採」という行為と隣り合わせにあります。
木を使うことは、必要な営みです。
しかし同時に、減っていく森の未来に
責任も生まれます。
だから、rewoodは選びました。
“増やすのではなく、活かす” という方向を。
私たちが取り扱いをはじめた「ヴィンテージ・チーク」 は、
東南アジアの建築で300年以上の長い年月を過ごした古材です。
すでに誰かの暮らしを支え、役目を終えた木。
さらに「1000年チーク」シリーズの
古材オブジェが発掘された
タイ地方は、古来より地震と山火事がすごく多い地域。
山火事や倒木で地中に埋まって石化したチーク材が、
少なくとも1000年以上経ち、化石化した大変貴重なオブジェです。
新しく伐って運ぶのではなく、
存在している価値を引き継ぐ。
■ どうしてチークなのか。
チークは 世界三大銘木 と呼ばれます。
耐久性、耐水性、そして天然油分による艶。
時間を経るほどに質感が深まる樹種です。
しかし、今や世界の多くの地域で
天然チークの伐採は厳しく制限されています。
木が大径木になるまで、80〜120年。
人の人生より長い時間が必要です。
だからこそ、
「再び活かす」ことに意味がある。

傷も、釘跡も、色の濃淡も。
それは欠点ではなく、時間の証明。
rewoodは、その表情を消さずに、
丁寧に仕上げ、家具として再生します。
新材では作れない価値が、すでに宿っているから。

Choosing not to cut trees
–Preserving them, not cutting them down.
Protecting forests sounds good.
But our work with wood always involves the act of cutting them down.
Using wood is a necessary activity.
But at the same time, it also creates a responsibility for the future of dwindling forests.
That’s why rewood chose to take the approach of “making the most of them, not increasing them.”
The “vintage teak” we began handling
is reclaimed wood that has served as a valuable resource in Southeast Asian architecture for over 300 years.
It’s wood that has already supported someone’s life and fulfilled its role.
Furthermore, the “1000-Year Teak” series of reclaimed wood objects
Thailand has been a region with frequent earthquakes and wildfires since ancient times.
These precious objects are made from teak that has been fossilized underground by forest fires and fallen trees for at least 1,000 years.
Rather than cutting and transporting new wood,
we preserve its existing value.
■ Why teak?
Teak is known as one of the world’s three most precious woods.
Durability, water resistance, and a luster due to natural oils.
It is a tree species whose texture deepens with age.
However, in many parts of the world,
the harvesting of natural teak is now strictly restricted.
It takes 80 to 120 years for a tree to grow to a large diameter.
This takes longer than a human lifetime.
That is why it is meaningful to “recycle” it.
■ Old wood is not just “material,” it is “history.”
Scars, nail marks, and variations in color…
These are not defects, but proof of time.
At rewood, we carefully finish and repurpose old wood into furniture, preserving its original appearance.
This is because it already contains value that cannot be created with new wood.
